CHAPTER 9

She hated to say it, but Billie was happy the convention wasn’t canceled. Something horrible had occurred, and she knew people were starting to talk, but the idea of having to cancel was too much for her. She needed something to occupy her mind and opening day of her newest food truck was going to give her just that.

Billie had awakened as refreshed as she could possibly be and was ready for the day. She went first to the commissary kitchen to check in on Asher. No matter how big of a pain he could be, he always helped her out as best as he could when it came to her trucks.

She knocked on his office door and waited for a reply. A moment later, he opened the door and gently pushed her along down the hallway until they reached the seating area inside the large kitchen. “Good morning. Have a seat,” he said and pulled a chair away from a table for her.

Billie complied with his instructions and sat down in the chair. Asher rushed to a kitchen area and poured coffee in a cup and set it in front of her.

“Thank you,” Billie said. She picked up the coffee and inhaled it for a moment before she took a slow sip. “Why are you being so nice? Did something happen?”

“No, but if you keep pointing it out, I’m going to stop.” Asher placed his palm down on the table. “How are you?”

“I’m okay. I wasn’t expecting to find out that the woman had been murdered, but I’m okay.”

Asher nodded. “I was afraid of that,” he said. “Beautiful women don’t often go swimming alone at night.”

“I guess not,” Billie said. “Wait, how did you know she was a beautiful woman?” She eyed him carefully.

He held up his hands. “Settle down. I talked to the chief this morning. He told me to keep a close eye on things around here, especially you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Billie asked.

“Well, someone followed you, you found a dead woman on the beach, a strange man popped up out of nowhere and lied to you about who he was, and I can almost bet that you and Rhonda are spending most of your time together talking about what you think is going on.”

Billie sighed and leaned back in the chair. “I guess you know it all, then, huh?”

“I don’t know it all.” He shook his head. “But I want you to know that I’ve got your back.”

“Thanks. I appreciate that, but I still really want to know what happened. Like, who could have done this, and why?”

“You don’t know anything about her,” Asher said. “So, how could you know? Let the cops figure it out. I’m sure they will.”

Billie looked up from her coffee. “I know. It’s all of the little things put together that are bothering me, though. The murder, the fact that I found her, and the weird guy who randomly disappeared after talking to me. I mean, the lady was dead right in front of us.
